Following the 2010 2-euro coin as part of Belgium's EU presidency, the Royal Mint of Belgium is now issuing a unique 2-euro coin in honour of the EU presidency Belgium 2024!
EU presidency
From 1 January to 30 June 2024, Belgium holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The presidency is awarded to one member state in turn for six months. However, to ensure the continuity of the long European legislative process, the successive presidents spend 18 months together in so-called 'Trios'. Our country has thus already been consulting for some time with Spain - the current president - and Hungary, which is next in line. Among other things, Belgium will focus on topical issues such as security, social policy, the green transition and economic growth.
As the Belgian presidency falls at the end of a Commission legislature, our country also wants to lay a solid foundation for the EU's strategic agenda for the period 2024-2029. In this way, it can help define the major directions the EU will take in the near future.
A euro coin from Belgium for the EU!
For the first six months of 2024, Belgium will sway the EU Council. To celebrate this appropriately, the Royal Mint of Belgium has released a particularly original 2-euro coin reflecting the natural shape of leadership.
At the bottom left, the text 'BELGIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU 2024'. Centrally across the coin, 27 swallows (27 member states) swarm around the country code BE. The swallow moves in unison and flies in one group after the trigger. Swallows are helpful, industrious and loyal. Left: 'IB' the initials of designer Iris Bruijns, below the mintmaster's mark (an erlenmeyer flask with aster) and the mintmark of the Royal Dutch Mint (the Mercury staff).
Available to you in two beautiful versions
This first 2-euro coin of 2024 is offered to you in Briliant Uncirculated (BU) and in Proof quality. The BU issue sticks in a colourful coincard and shows the map of the EU with Belgium highlighted in gold alongside Belgian landmarks. The 12 European stars are led upwards by swallows. The reverse shows the map of Belgium and a swallow with a relay baton. As usual, two language versions are also provided for this coincard.
You can also opt for our Proof version. The limited edition of only 5,000 pieces makes this luxury issue a particularly sought-after collector's item that will also be in great demand outside our country. Proof or BU, the choice is yours. Or maybe you want to order both versions? Your collection can only benefit.
