Never before in Belgian numismatics has a 2 euro coin been dedicated to an artistic movement! In honour of the year of New Art in Belgium, the Royal Mint of Belgium is issuing a unique 2 euro coin. 130 years of New Art in Belgium In 1893, architect Victor Horta put the finishing touches to the Hôtel Tassel. This marked the start of New Art in Brussels. The imposing façade, sumptuous stained-glass interiors, decorative mosaics and swirling wrought iron soon became the architectural hallmarks of the late Belle Époque. Nature was an important source of inspiration for New Art, as evidenced by the generous use of plant and floral motifs and the many representations of birds. In 2023, 130 years later, Brussels will be celebrating its New Art heritage with a rich cultural programme of exceptional exhibitions, unique city walks and many other fascinating events. It goes without saying that such a unique anniversary programme cannot do without an appropriate commemorative coin. That's why the Royal Mint has designed a magnificent €2 commemorative coin that perfectly reflects the refined elegance of the New Art style. The design At the top of the coin is the text "ART NOUVEAU". Below and around it is a detail of the façade of the Hotel van Eetvelde, a mosaic mural by Victor Horta. On the left, the different (an Erlenmeyer flask with an aster) and the different of the Royal Dutch Mint (the stick of Mercury). Next to it, the country BE and the year 2023, and on the right "IB" (the initials of designer Iris Bruijns). The design expresses the asymmetrical composition typical of New Art. The elegant interplay of lines is a clear link with nature. With a little imagination, we can make out an iris flower, creating a visible link with the designer Iris Bruijns.
