During the five decades of Soviet rule (1940 to 1990), local officials tended to portray song festivals as great achievements of 'socialist Lithuania', but the celebrations always included what might be termed a healthy, albeit well-concealed, nationalism that was evident in programmes invariably dominated by Lithuanian folk songs and dances. The tradition received a fresh impetus in 1990, after Lithuania restored its independence in March of that year and launched a song festival later in the summer as a potent symbol of freedom. The national festivals currently include just over a dozen of events, from exhibitions of traditional crafts to various musical performances, and the Song Day, when some 10,000 singers gather in a purpose- built venue in the largest natural park in Vilnius. This tradition celebrated its centenary in 2024.
